A Potential Downside of Automation

This article looks at the possibility that our reliance on automation is reducing our skills to a point where we cannot execute properly when automation fails.  Today most automated systems expect to be able to return control to a human operator when a situation occurs that exceed the system's design parameters.  Are we at greater risk of disaster because operators who spend most of their time monitoring an automated system have lost their ability to execute when they need to?
